<p>&#xA0; &#xA0; &#xA0; The great thing about creating a lotion recipe is that you can customize it to be the texture you love and you can control the ingredients added. It can be tricky to know how much water, oils and emulsifiers are needed to create a stable product. A great recommendation when first starting out is to use a tried-and-true recipe to get a feel for the process before starting with your own recipe. This is so that you can get a grasp of the basics before being the often long process of creating your own unique formulation.<br>&#xA0; &#xA0; &#xA0;The first thing to understand when making your own lotion is the basic ingredients.&#xA0; Usually the main ingredient of a lotion recipe is water. <em>Water typically makes up about 70-80% of a lotion recipe. </em>Using more water results in a thinner and lighter lotion. The texture of your lotion will depend on the proportions of each ingredient and the type of emulsifier and oils. In addition to water, below you will find a list of basic ingredients you will need to create your lotion.&#xA0;</p>
<p><br><strong>Oils and Butters&#xA0; <br></strong>Typically<strong> </strong>used around 10-25% of the recipe. Using a larger percentage of oils and butters in the recipe will usually result in a thicker heavier lotion. The type of oil and butter used also plays a huge role in the lotion texture. For example, adding a lightweight oil like sweet almond oil gives lotion very different properties than adding cocoa butter.</p>
<p><br><strong>Emulsifiers</strong><br>Oil and water don&apos;t mix well, so in order to get them to come together into a stable product, you will need some sort of emulsifier or emulsifying wax. Emulsifiers are typically used around 10% or less in a lotion recipe. An emulsifier is key to creating a successful lotion. The emulsifier binds the water and oil together. The last thing you want is for the oils and water in your lotion recipe to separate. Various emulsifiers have different binding strengths and properties, so it&#x2019;s important to consider which emulsifier is best for your recipe. (i.e. E-Wax or BTMS 50)</p>
<p><br><strong>Co-Emulsifiers</strong><br>In addition to emulsifiers, there is another category of products referred to as co-emulsifiers. These ingredients are not meant to emulsify oils and water on their own, but will help to stabilize an existing emulsion to prevent your product from separating. Co-emulsifiers often help to thicken products as well. A recipe does not require a co-emulsifier, but they often create a more stable and creamy product (i.e. Cetearyl Alcohol Flakes, Stearic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol Flakes).<br><br></p>
<p><strong>Preservative</strong><br>Be sure to add a preservative to your lotion! This step is important because lotion contains water (and usually at a very high percentage). A preservative is an anti-microbial solution that helps to prevent mold &amp; bacteria from growing in your products. Without it your product is likely to look like a science project gone wrong. While it&#x2019;s possible to make lotion without a preservative, it won&#x2019;t last very long. Within weeks, you will find mold &amp; bacteria growing in your product. If you prefer to stay away from preservatives, we would recommend creating a body butter that does not contain water, and thus does not require a preservative. Or another option is that you can always use the natural preservative line but it is important to test your shelf life if using a natural preservative as it may not hold up as long as a standard preservative.<br><br><br><strong>Additional Ingredients</strong><br>Special additives can enhance your formulation and make it more unique. Additional Ingredients that can be in your lotion recipe include ingredients such as extracts, additional humectants (ex: glycerin), colors and fragrance. When adding extracts be sure to check as to whether they are oil or water soluble. This will help you to determine if you should add the product to the oil phase or the water phase of your lotion. The suggested usage rate is about 3-5% of the total weight of your lotion recipe. A Vanilla Color Stabilizer may be needed if your fragrance has vanilla. <br>To give a hint of color, Micas and Stained Glass colors work best. Micas will add color and a sparkle/shimmer finish. They are stable in a high pH, do not migrate and do not fade with UV exposure. Stained Glass colors will create a beautiful pastel color in lotion making.</p>
<h3 id="tips">Tips</h3>
<p><br><em><strong>~Rosemary Oleoresin Extract, Honeyquat, and Vitamin E Tocopherol T-50 are not preservatives.</strong></em> They are antioxidants which will help with oxidation of oils so that it your oils do not go rancid. They do not prevent gram positive and negative bacterial or mold from growing.</p>
<p><em><strong>~When making lotion it is important to hold your heat!</strong></em> By this, you should insure that your water holds at a certain temperature for 20 minutes. This can be done by heating your water to <strong>160 to 170 &#xB0;F</strong> and hold that temperature for 20 minutes. This can be done with a double boiler, or keeping your pot in a warm oven. This step will kill some of the non-endoscope (dormant, tough and non-reproductive structure produced by some bacteria) forming bacteria. When doing this step some of your water may evaporate (10% or so) so you may need to make up for the lost water.</p>

Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks for filling those pesky lotion bottles.</span></div>

<div><strong>POUR THIN</strong></div>
<div>If you have a steady hand, you can pour the lotion at a thin consistency right into your bottles. To get the lotion to be the right consistency, slowly heat the lotion and be careful not to break the emulsion by heating it too much as it will cause it to separate. You also want to be aware of the maximum heating temperature of your preservative and be sure to keep the heat below that <img alt="124-Lotion-Making" class="hs-image-align-left" src="https://f.hubspotusercontent10.net/hubfs/8800969/124-Lotion-Making.jpg" style="width: 179px;" width="179">temperature. <strong>Exceeding the maximum temperature can inactivate the preservative, allowing bacteria to grow. </strong>When your lotion is warmed to the proper consistency, begin filling the bottles. Many handmade artisans prefer to pour freehand or use a funnel in the neck of the bottle. In our experience when the lotion starts to thicken as it begins to cool, the funnel can become clogged. We prefer pouring freehand using our <a href="https://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/products/mix-pour-funnel-pitcher.aspx" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Mix &amp; Pour Funnel Pitchers</a> &#x2013;the long nose on the pitcher helps to keep a controlled stream while filling.</div>
<div><strong><br>TIP</strong>: Much like when creating the formulation, a slow, steady heat such as from a double boiler in a heat safe container would work well when heating the product to reach the right consistency for pouring(You can then pour the product a secondary container for pouring such as our Mix &amp; Pour Funnel Pitchers if you so wished). Use a thermometer (Such as a candy or liquid thermometer) to monitor the temperature to ensure you don&apos;t heat it to high or too quickly.</div>

<div><strong>PASTRY OR CELLO BAG</strong></div>
<div>Another option is using a disposable pastry bag or a cone shaped bag such as a <a href="https://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/products/clear-cello-bags-12-x-6-cone-shape.aspx" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Clear Cello Bag (12&#x201D; x 6&#x201D; cone).</a> Simply fill the bag most of the way with the lotion, twist the end so it can be held comfortably in your hand, (which provides pressure inside) and when ready trim the tip off. Once the tip has been trimmed, the lotion will start to pour out quickly. Be sure to have an empty bottle ready! Twist the top of the bag and squeeze it gently as the lotion is poured to keep a continuous pressure so that it continues to flow.&#xA0; This makes a very quick way to fill the bottles but it can get a little messy when it comes time to refill the bag and clean up.</div>

From a do-it-yourself standpoint, homemade body butter will last for months without the use of a preservative since water is not an ingredient. Body butters can be whipped or made into a thick paste. Stored away from moisture and light, this homemade body butter should last a minimum of 6 months or longer. It is recommended to use a spoon or spatula to scoop out product rather than your fingers- this will extend the life of the body butter.</p>
<p><br><strong>HOW&#x2019;S IT MADE?</strong><br>Body Butter has a few main ingredients. It&apos;s super simple to make and the butter can be customized based on your individual preference. Best part is that it only takes a few ingredients to create a great body butter recipe!</p>
<p><br><strong>Main Ingredient: BUTTERS</strong></p>
<p>Homemade body butter starts with butter such as Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter and even various Butter Blends etc... Let&#x2019;s take a look at some of the butters that are most commonly used:<br><br><strong>Shea Butter</strong>: Shea butter comes from the &#x201C;nut&#x201D; (or pit) of the fruit found on the Karite Tree. It has a somewhat strong scent when it&#x2019;s purchased in an unrefined state. Since Shea Butter is naturally soft, it can be used as the main ingredient in body&#xA0; butter, or it may be combined with another butter&#x2013;cocoa or mango butter&#x2013;to create a custom body butter.<br>&#xA0;<br><strong>Cocoa Butter</strong>: Cocoa butter comes from the cocoa bean, so it smells like chocolate. Cocoa Butter is hard at room temperature, and it melts easily. It&apos;s recommended not to make a 100% cocoa butter body butter because you&#x2019;ll end up with a final product that&#x2019;s solid as a rock. Cocoa butter must be mixed with a softer butter, like Shea or Mango Butter, to yield a soft and spreadable final product.<br>&#xA0;<br><strong>Mango Butter</strong>: Mango Butter comes from the seed of mango fruit. It&#x2019;s a soft butter, similar to Shea Butter in that it can have a bit of a gritty texture before it&#x2019;s melted down. If you don&#x2019;t want to use Shea Butter to make body butter, then Mango Butter is the best replacement. Mango Butter may be combined with Shea or Cocoa Butter to create a custom formulation.</p>
<p><br><strong>Secondary Ingredient: OILS</strong></p>
<p>Oil is the second main ingredient used to make body butter. Carrier oils such as Almond, Jojoba, Grapeseed, Coconut Oil, etc. can be used.&#xA0; Let&#x2019;s take a look at some of the most commonly used oils:</p>
<p><strong>Coconut Oil</strong>: This is a great oil for general moisturizing and serves as a protective layer, helping to retain the moisture in your skin. It also acts as a mild oil suitable for those with inflamed and irritated skin, and those with skin sensitivities.<br><br><strong>Sweet Almond Oil</strong>: Sweet almond oil contains fatty acids as well as vitamins A<br>and E and penetrates easily into the skin.<br><br><strong>Sunflower Oil</strong>: An oil wealthy in oleic acids with high amounts of vitamins A, D, and E, it also has beneficial amounts of lecithin and unsaturated fatty acids. It is deeply nourishing and conditioning for the skin, and is highly recommended for recipes designed to treat dry, weathered, aged, and damaged skin.<br><br><strong>Jojoba Oil</strong>: Jojoba oil comes from the beans of a shrub like plant, and it is actually a liquid plant wax rather than an oil. It can be clear or bright golden in color, has a mild odor, and is favored in the carrier oil family because of its advanced molecular stability. It makes a wonderful skin moisturizer because of its absorption properties that are similar to our skin&apos;s own sebum.<br><br><br><br><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Additional</strong><strong> Ingredients</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Antioxidants</strong>: Adding an antioxidant such as <a href="https://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/products/rosemary-oleoresin-extract-roe.aspx" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE)</a>, Grapefruit Extract or <a href="https://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/products/vitamin-e-natural-t-50.aspx" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Vitamin E</a> to prevent oils and butters from going rancid. This will help extend the life of your final product.</p>
<p><strong>Wax</strong>: Beeswax or a Non-Animal Wax alternative can be added to body butter to help maintain its consistency. This is extremely helpful if using/selling product in warmer temperatures. This ingredient can be eliminated altogether if you prefer not to use a wax. You just need to insure that you have a good ratio or hard &amp; soft butters and cut back on the amount of oil used.</p>
<p><strong>Scent</strong>: A Fragrance Oil, Hydrosol or Essential Oil may be added for scent and additional skincare benefits.&#xA0;</p>
