Common issues related to the making of Bath Bombs, Fizzies, and Bubble Bars

Below are some common issues that customers may experience with bath bombs:
&#xA0;
1. Why is my bath bomb crumbly or cracking? If you find that your bath bomb is crumbly, the mixture may be too dry. Adding more witch hazel, water, rubbing alcohol or oils will give the mixture a more moist texture, which will be less likely<img alt="watermelon-bubble-scoops-recipe" class="hs-image-align-right" src="https://f.hubspotusercontent10.net/hubfs/8800969/watermelon-bubble-scoops-recipe.png" style="width: 260px;" width="260"> to crumble and crack once removed from the mold. If your fizzy is cracking after it&#x2019;s been in the mold, it&#x2019;s possible that it was too wet and the mixture is expanding as it sits in the mold.
2. Why is my bath bomb soft? If your bath bomb is soft, the mixture may have too much moisture. If you add too much witch hazel, water, rubbing alcohol or oils during the mixing process, add more dry ingredients to balance the texture. If you live in a humid, wet climate, the moisture in the air can prevent the bath bombs from becoming hard. Adding a small amount of clay like kaolin clay or cornstarch can help the bath bombs harden. They also make the bath bombs a bit sturdier.
3. Why does my bath bomb have lumps, warts or bumps on the surface? A bumpy texture on your bath bomb is usually a result of clumps in the dry ingredients or not fully mixing the fragrance oil. Baking soda in particular tends to clump together. Before adding oil, color, fragrance or other additives, break up large clumps with your hands. To remove and break up smaller clumps, pour the dry ingredients through a fine mesh sifter. This extra step gives a smooth texture. Bath bomb warts can also occur when the fizzy contains too much moisture. Usually the culprit is fragrance or essential oil so mix extra well to ensure the wet is fully incorporated into the dry.
4. Why is my bath bomb not fizzing very much? If your bath bomb is not fizzing in the tub as much as you&#x2019;d like, you may try increasing the <img alt="1292-Vanilla-Bean-Bubble-Bars" class="hs-image-align-left" src="https://f.hubspotusercontent10.net/hubfs/8800969/1292-Vanilla-Bean-Bubble-Bars.jpg" style="width: 200px;" width="200">amount of citric acid in your recipe. You can start with a mix of 2 parts baking soda to 1.5 parts citric acid. In addition, if you use cornstarch in your recipe, you may try decreasing the amount or eliminating it all together. Fizzing can also decrease if a large amount of oil is used. If your bath bomb comes in contact with moisture from the air or from a damp environment, the fizzing reaction can decrease. To protect it from moisture, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap.
 5. Why is my bath bomb expanding out of the mold? If your bath bombs are expanding in the mold, this means the mixture is too wet and the fizzing reaction is happening prematurely. If you use a colorant or fragrance that&#xA0; contains water, this can cause the bath bomb mixture to fizz. If this happens, the bath bombs may still may fizz in the tub, although the amount of fizz may be decreased. In addition, bath bomb mixtures can fizz prematurely due to moisture in the air. For example, if you make bath fizzies on a moist and rainy day, this can cause the bath fizzies to expand in the mold.

Bath bombs/Fizzies are hard-packed mixtures of mostly dry ingredients which effervesce when wet. They&#xA0;are designed to take relaxing bath time to a completely new level. They are a fun luxury that is best described as fireworks for you bath.

What is a Bubble Bar?
A Bubble Bar is essentially the solid form of bubble bath product. They generally come in discs or brick-like shapes and are typically smaller than bath bombs.

Although similar in ingredients and texture, the objective of both products vary. The purpose of the bubble bar is to create mounds of bubbles on top of the water, whereas the bath bomb is designed to fizz under the water whilst also creating mesmerizing patterns of color.&#xA0;

What makes them fizz?
The mixture of baking soda and citric acid ignites a fizzy reaction when they come in contact with water. Bath bombs will get less effective as time goes on. The fresher they are, the faster they&apos;ll fizz. To give them extra fizz, you can add <a href="https://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/products/lathanol-lal-coarse-aka-slsa.aspx" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Lathanol LAL Course</a> to the batch (Better known to the Bath Bomb community as SLSa).
 What are they made of?
Bath Bombs and Fizzies can contain endless additives such as natural moisturizers of different oils and butters, milk powders, arrow root powder, clay, cornstarch, essential oils, fragrances, salts, bath tea, toys, etc&#x2026; Each bomb is hand pressed into a mold resulting in a compound mixture of ingredients. You drop the bomb in your warm bath and it will begin to fizz, and bubble with colors and scents of nature and voila!
 These luxurious products only take a few moments to make, so it is important to have the ingredients on hand and measured before you get started.&#xA0;

Baking Soda-The backbone of this recipe is alkalizing baking soda. It is a necessary complement to the acidic citric acid and part of the fizzing reaction.
Citric Acid-necessary for the fizzing reaction that makes bath bombs feel like bathing in champagne.
Corn Starch, Kaolin Clay or Arrowroot-Corn starch provides the silky feel that we all love from bath bombs and can also lend to hardening. Kaolin Clay and Arrowroot also work to help harden but doesn&#x2019;t provide quite as silky of a finished product.
Oil-Pick a simple oil like olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil or get more fancy with Sea Buckthorn oil, Argan oil, Jojoba oil or Apricot oil.
Salt-Stick to basic salt or take it up a notch with epsom salt or to help provide a soothing bath.
Liquid-Basic water works, but most people use which hazel or rubbing alcohol as a binder for the dry ingredients.
 Scents, Colors, &amp; Optional Additives
This is where the options get endless. Use your favorite essential, fragrance or hydrosol, add dried herbs or flowers, yogurt powders, coloring toys, etc&#x2026;
&#xA0;Color: Per FDA regulation, you must use an approved color since the color will come in contact with sensitive areas. Keep in mind that bath bomb, bubble bars and bath salts are all intended for soaking and would all fall under the same category as lips and eyes in regards to color because it focuses on any surface of the body that has a mucous membrane. With that said there are some colors that are not safe for bath use (most blues and greens are not safe). Tips
~To help the color and oil mix into the bath water rather than pooling on top, we recommend adding the emulsifier <a href="https://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/products/polysorbate-80.aspx" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Polysorbate 80</a>. This will help color and oil to wipe out of the tub easier. We strongly recommend only using &#xBC; tsp per pound of base. Using too much color may cause staining. Test your final product to ensure optimal performance and no staining.
 ~Protect work areas and clothing when mixing.
~If using bath bomb colors, the colorant must be batch certified if the product is intended to be sold. At this time we certify bulk bath bomb colors. Bath bomb colors that are broken down into smaller sizes are not batch certified and cannot be used in cosmetic products that will be sold.

 Effervesce: to bubble, hiss, and foam as gas escapes.
 Chemical Reaction: a process in which one or more substances, the reactants, are converted to one or more different substances, the products.
 Citric Acid: a weak acid found naturally in citrus fruits.
 Sodium Bicarbonate: a salt composed of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions. It reacts with acidic components (citric acid) in bath bombs, releasing carbon dioxide.

Many customers prefer emulsified sugar scrubs to traditional sugar scrubs because the oil will not separate and pool on the top of the scrub. Read our formula breakdown guide to help you formulate your own luxurious sugar scrubs!

Emulsified sugar scrubs are gentle exfoliating products that slough off dead skin to reveal soft and supple skin. Oils, butters, stearic acid and emulsifying wax are first melted on low heat until all ingredients are liquid. Next the liquid is stirred and cooled to 122&#xBA;F. Fragrance, a preservative, antioxidants and color are added to the liquids and mixed until they are around 80&#xBA;F. Finally sugar is mixed into the liquid. The end result is a homogeneous sugar scrub that stays firm. <div>Sugar: 66% White granulated sugar provides the scrubbiness for emulsified sugar scrubs. The small grain size is gentle enough to use on the face if you decide to make a face scrub, but is also nice for hands and feet. Oil: 17&#x2013;20% Any cosmetic oil can be used in sugar scrubs, but we prefer oils with an excellent glide. Avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, evening primrose oil, pomace olive oil, rice bran oil and sweet almond oil are some of our favorites. Butter: 7% Butters add an extra touch of luxury to emulsified sugar scrubs. Mango butter, Sal butter and Shea butter are popular choices, but you could also use a slightly harder butter such as Tucuma butter or any cosmetic butter blend. Emulsifying Wax: 3% Emulsifying wax binds the ingredients together to give emulsified scrubs that homogenous consistency. This ingredient is the main difference between traditional sugar scrubs and emulsified sugar scrubs. Stearic Acid: 3% Stearic acid hardens and gives body to emulsified sugar scrubs. It also aids in stabilizing the emulsion. Germall Plus Liquid: 0.50% Sugar scrubs are sometimes used in the shower and sometimes users dip wet hands into the jar. Both of these circumstances will introduce water to the sugar scrub, which eventually will lead to bacterial growth. Germall Plus Liquid is our preservative to keep our scrub pristine. Optional: Fragrance: 0&#x2013;2% Fragrance adds that wonderful smell to your product. Essential oils, fragrance oils and natural fragrance oils are all commonly used in scrubs. Make sure to use them at their safe usage rate. Antioxidant: 0.05&#x2013;0.50% Antioxidants such as Vitamin E and Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE) extend the shelf life of the oils and butters in the recipe. Without the antioxidant the oils will turn rancid much quicker. Mica Color: &lt; 1% Color attracts customers to your product, easily differentiates scents if you have more than one scented scrub and creates a beautiful finished product. We love using oil-locking mica colors in our scrubs for even color. &#xA0;</div>
